Apprenticeships

Electrical apprenticeship

Apprentices successfully undertaking this apprenticeship will be eligible to become licensed electricians. They will learn to install and maintain electrical components, wiring, equipment and systems.  Apprentices can elect to work in specialised areas of the electrical industry such as home automation,   C-BUS and TEBIS systems that control lighting, security, home theatres, air conditioning and much more for residential and commercial applications. Apprentices will rotate between industry employers and will be expected to travel between work sites. Traditionally the electrical apprenticeship lasts approximately 4 years.

Areas of specialisations available for electrical apprentices include:

Control - Apprentices specialising in this area will install, maintain and repair industry control systems and equipment that involves pneumatic, mechanical, electrical/electronic instrumentation systems and equipment.

Energy Supply - Apprentices specialising in this area will install and maintain apparatus and equipment belonging to electricity distributors. This can range from equipment in consumer's switchboards to substations and control centres. Apprentices will work in industrial workshops, substations, switch yards and other premises associated with electricity distribution.

Fire Protection - Apprentices specialising in this area will install and maintain fire protection alarm wiring in a variety of premises including residential, commercial and industrial settings.

Installation and servicing - Apprentices specialising in this area will install and maintain wiring in a variety of residential, commercial and industrial premises.

Maritime Installation - Apprentices specialising in maritime installation will install and maintain equipment on ships, submersibles, shipyards and off-shore drilling platforms.

Mining - Apprentices specialising in mining will install and maintain equipment in open cut and underground mines, workshops specialising in mining equipment, collieries, associated land drilling and mining operations.

Plant Servicing - Apprentices specialising in this area will install and maintain equipment associated with mobile and stationary plant in commercial and industrial settings.

Process - Apprentices specialising in this area will install, maintain and repair process control systems and equipment that involves pneumatic, hydraulic mechanical and electrical/electronic instrumentation systems and equipment.

Security - Apprentices specialising in this area will install, commission, maintain and repair equipment used to maintain the security of commercial and domestic premises.

Signalling (Rail) - Apprentices specialising in this area will be involved in the installation and maintenance of signalling systems used for the control of public transport, especially trains and automobile traffic. This would include working in manufacturing workshops, industrial base workshops and equipped motor vehicles.
